Highlights

Explore the Atlantic Seaboard with its cosmopolitan suburbs, Sea Point and Camps Bay, with its beautiful white sandy beaches and glorious views of the Twelve Apostles which are part of the Table Mountain Range. Pass villages and fishing communities on the way to the Cape Point Nature Reserve.  This majestic coastline offers drama worthy of being called ‘Nature’s Greatest Show’, an area that comprises of over 17 300 acres of indigenous fauna and flora, with a variety of wildlife that includes Baboons, Rhebok, Cape Mountain Zebra, Bontebok and the elusive Eland. The ride in the funicular goes down tip of Cape Point.

Highlights

The tour starts by winding through the attractive residential suburb of Tamboerskloof en-route to Cape Town centre and up to Kloof Nek to the base of the spectacular Table Mountain. The ascent to the top of Table Mountain is in the new revolving cable car and reaches a height of 1067 metres.  From the top (weather permitting) there are magnificent views of the city and Table Bay below, Robben Island, the Atlantic Seaboard as well as most of the spectacular Cape Peninsula.  Afterwards the tour continues through the streets of Cape Town past the Castle of Good Hope, the company gardens and the historic Cape Malay District. The opportunity to explore Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands – South Africa’s premier wine producing region, against the stunning backdrop of mountains, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the historical town of Franschhoek with oak-lined trees and graceful Cape Dutch style homes. Enjoy a wine cellar tasting tour, cheese and more wine tasting. Many of these wine farms still bear their original French names and most of these farms have beautiful examples of Cape Dutch architecture. This is a traditionally French town and the food and wine capital of the country. Eight of the top 100 restaurants in the country are found in Franschhoek, and 30 wine cellars.  A few of the finest wines from this area are L’Ormarins, La Motte and Vrede en Lust.

Highlights

This tour includes visits to museums and places of historic and cultural interest, which made South Africa what it is today.  District Six, named the Sixth Municipal District of Cape Town in 1867, was originally established as a mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants. District Six was a vibrant centre with close links to the city and the port. The Slave Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town. Over three centuries the building has had many names, The Slave Lodge, Government Offices Building, Old Supreme Court, and SA Cultural History Museum. These reflect the long and rich history of the building.  The Slave Lodge was built in 1679 as the Slave Lodge of the Dutch East India Company. The building was restored in 1960 for use as a cultural history museum. The final stop is at the Goodman Gallery. This gallery was established 39 years ago with their primary goal being to encourage contemporary South African artists to exhibit. The policy of the Gallery is to foster the culture of the country.

5. The Townships and Cape Flats

This is an eye opening experience of ‘township life’ in South Africa of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.  It talks about APARTHEID South Africa – Segregation, Separation and Oppression. This trip travels through sprawling satellite camps of seemingly endless shanties which are makeshift structures of various materials which provide little more than a roof and some shelter. The tour includes a walk through a vibrant black community with all its different social strata. Langa is Cape Town’s oldest formal black township with the opportunity to mingle and exchange cultural values with the local people and try the traditional African sorghum beer and ginger beer at a ‘Spaza’ which is a small township shop, or a ‘Shebeen’ which is a small tavern. Learn about the vibrant community with a vision of hope for the future South Africa.

Synonymous with Nelson Mandela, Robben Island was formerly a political prison and leper colony. This historic landmark was recently established as a museum and national monument. Experience the conditions of incarceration and view Nelson Mandela's maximum-security prison cell (Cell 5).  It was in this cell that the other prisoners discussed strategy, freedom and the future.  Tour the lime quarries where hard labour was served and later, many of the inmates would develop eye problems as a result of the sun's reflection off the lime surfaces. This well-preserved landmark is a monument to the triumph of freedom, dignity and determination over humiliation and oppression.

On Robben Island, visitors' movements are restricted by regulation to the bus and the group's guide. The tours of the island are normally conducted in large buses.  We have arranged for smaller buses for the ISPN delegates and a personalised tour of the island by ex-political prisoners, some which have served time on Robben Island.
