LAYANG LAYANG
Landbased Itinerary Liveaboard Itinerary

300 km North of Kota Kinabalu lies the " Jewel of the Borneo Banks ". The Layang Layang atoll rises from the South China Sea. With its peaceful isolation and breathtaking seascapes, Layang Layang is one the most remote spots on earth.

This remote oceanic atoll is yet another example of the World Class Diving to be found in Borneo, Malaysia. Throughout the chain of 13 submerged coral islets, there are many fabulous dive sites. It's Coral walls plunge a staggering 2000 meters down to the floor of the South China Sea. Venturing below the surface of the sparkling blue water, you'll be met with an average visibility of 50 meters and find a dive destination that is largely unexplored. This offers the adventurous diver, an opportunity to experience Frontier Diving at its best.

The dramatic underwater topography of this unique atoll, combined with its remote location, accounts for the abundant marine life and pristine condition. Large shoals of pelagic, including massive numbers of barracuda, jacks and the hammerhead shark frequent these waters. The reefs & walls are also home to some of the finest & most spectacular displays of hard and soft corals in the world. They also harbour many species yet to be identified and named. Layang Layang Island should be on every serious divers " Must See" list.

Pristine corals and clear water are the area's trademarks. Divers can expect to see the Gorgonian Forest, red sea whips and shark caves littered with white tip sharks, nurse sharks and hammerheads. April and May is the best time to see schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks, which gather to perform mating rituals. You will also find viable breeding colonies of grouper and Napoleon wrasse. Layang Layang is like a liveaboard dive boat that sits permanently over the dive site. There is a good ambience, and with its limited group of visitors and friendly mixed-race Malaysian staff you soon get to know everyone.

Best Time to Travel : April through October is the best time to visit. The rainy season is November to March. The water temperature ranges from 26ºC to 30ºC year round.
