Inhambane is truly the Mozambique province to explore if you are a diver. This marine life rich province lies very close to many divers heart as memories of swimming with whale sharks and giant mantas are born here, in Inhambane. Although Inhambane province is the diving gem of Mozambique’s seven coastal provinces it is still not flooded with tourists and it still has that amazing peaceful ambience that most divers and travellers alike look for.
Here you can experience great diving and exploring of rich unspoilt reefs which are host to some of the most amazing marine life the world has to offer. The reefs around Guinjata, Tofo and Barra offer varying depths from 10 - 40 metres. Conditions are ideal for some of the larger pelagics. Whale Shark and Manta Ray sightings are very common, especially on beautiful Manta Reef, The Oasis and Galleria. At Manta Reef not only is the topography of the actual reef absolutely magnificent but close encounters with Manta rays are practically guaranteed at the three cleaning stations, making this a phenomenal dive site and this is also the place to see Spanish Dancers swimming midwater during the day, quite a rare sight. Paper fish, Frogfish and Harlequin Shrimp are also present and the reefs are teeming with colourful tropical fish such as angel, butterfly, surgeonfish and graceful Moorish Idols.
Large yellow trumpet fish and trigger fish are found in abundance on reefs such as Praia da Rocha, a shallow, low-lying reef, along with large bottom dwellers such as Crocodile Fish and Blue-Spotted Rays. The configuration of coral bommies create some spectacular swim-throughs and gullies, home to beautiful Honeycomb Moray Eels, Egg Cowries, octopus and sometimes a majestic Loggerhead or Leatherback Turtle. The list of stunning marine life is endless and even the elusive Dugong resides here. If you would like to see Whale Sharks, October to April is the best time to see these magnificent creatures in these waters although it is possible to spot them most of the year.
June to September is an ideal time to see migrating Humpback Whales cruising along the coastline and regular Dolphin sightings makes the day's diving extra special. Manta Rays appear all year round and the elusive Dugong between the months of June to October
