Ponta Do Ouro (Point of Gold) is situated at the Southern tip of Mozambique, just 3kms from the North Eastern South African border. Ponta D'ouro is the southernmost tip of Mozambique and attracts many visitors every year. Despite access being restricted to 4x4 in most areas, tourism is booming here due to the proximity to South Africa and Swaziland. The coastline stretching north from Ponta D'Ouro towards Ponta do Malongane and onwards to Ponta Mamoli is known for its marine life and beaches so there are plenty of beach resorts, fishing and diving lodges to be found in the area.
The small town in the sandy bay of Ponta D’Ouro, is a diver’s paradise with endless white beaches and coral reefs which are home to a teeming variety of marine life – turtles, rockcod, wrasse, parrotfish, angelfish, sharks and eels all add to the wonderful and vibrant underwater scenery, punctuated occasionally by the clicks and whistles of dolphins and by the haunting calls of whales. “Ponta” also offers wonderful dive opportunities with all of the apex predators. On some days and best seen in the early mornings there are hundreds of Hammerheads; Zambezi and Dusky sharks, not to mention large game fish and Manta rays in the area. Huge potatoe bass also abound all keeping watchful eyes on the pinnacles. One of the main attractions however are the dolphins. You can participate in an environmentally friendly dolphin encounter experience and come face to face with one of nature’s most intelligent creations – the bottlenose dolphins. Truly an experience of a lifetime !
